Anyone who knows me knows that I can’t stay up late to save my life! With that being said, I am definitely a morning person and always have been! My parents love to joke that when I was little they never needed to give me a bedtime because I was already sleeping by the time they checked on me. While I’ve always been the type to naturally be up and going by 7:00, I shifted to a much earlier morning schedule back in college. Before COVID, I used to wake up at 4:00AM every morning to get to the gym and eventually it became really easy for me. Here’s three tips and tricks that help me wake up early:
1. Sun Alarm
I absolutely rave about my sun alarm to anyone who will listen! This thing has made such a big difference in helping me wake up early. I have been using it for about 3 years now. So how does it work? You set an alarm and the clock will begin to brighten gradually starting 30 minutes prior to your set time. The light helps signal your body to begin waking up gradually, which is much more pleasant than a jolting alarm. I like to describe it as being “carried out of my slumber” versus “kicked out of my sleep.” I definitely feel more energized waking up to a lit room. It’s also less tempting to hit the snooze when my room isn’t all dark. I highly recommend trying this out especially if you have to wake up before the sun. Easily one of the best investments I have made for my home. There are a variety of options available, this is the one I use:
2. Have Something To Look Forward To
I always find it easier to wake up when I have a morning ritual that even the laziest version of myself will get out of bed for on any day. For me, this is my morning iced coffee. Recently, I’ve been obsessed with Dalgona coffee. It’s super easy and inexpensive to make at home. Check out the recipe I follow here. I only let myself have this treat in the morning which makes it all the more motivating to get out of bed!
3. Do as Much as You Can the Night Before
I find that when I am prepared for my morning it makes it easier to start. I try to minimize the number of things I have to do in the morning before leaving the house by preparing what I can in advance the night before. This usually looks like packing my gym bag with my work clothes and preparing my lunch bag with anything that doesn’t need to be refrigerated like utensils or snacks. This may seem simple but for me it makes a difference. I try to avoid negative stress when possible and not feeling rushed or worried about forgetting something when I’m trying to leave in the AM, definitely makes for a more pleasant morning.
So there are my 3 tips for waking up early. If I’m feeling really groggy, I splash cold water on my face ten times which definitely wakes me up. The best thing you can do is be consistent. Do your best to wake up at the same time every morning and your body will adapt after some time. What helps you wake up in the morning? Do you have any morning rituals you look forward to?
